“Smoking the Fool” was inspired by the amazing tradition of “Haxey Hood”, one of the oldest traditions in England presumed to date back to the 14th Century. As our view is onto the “Hood” fields and I have been brought up with this amazing tradition within the Isle of Axholme I felt it would be a challenge to encapsulate it within a painting, whilst helping to keep this important tradition alive.
